JAC GRACE

Artist. Educator. Art Therapist

I am qualified creative arts therapist (MATh) with over fifteen years experience in group facilitation, education, private practice and creative process.  I teach at The MIECAT Institute, facilitating in the Master's program of art therapy and founded Beautiful Wasteland, an eco-printing art therapy studio in 2012.

I live, work and create on the un-ceded lands of the Kulin Nation. I pay my respects to Elders past and present.

I embrace the life long practice of decolonising myself and my practice. I see to be inclusive of diversity and acknowledge that despite my values, I have unconscious biases that I am working to transform.

My practice is trauma -informed, collaborative and grounded in attachment theory. I see my role as supporting an arts based inquiry into lived experience.

I endeavour to create space to explore needs  and values, often implicitly held, and where conflict in these may presents in our embodied emotional experiencing and patterned ways of being.

I am passionate about researching lived experience in collaborative arts based ways.  I value creating opportunities for people to inquire into, represent and exhibit and present their knowings to the broader community as a way of shifting culture to embrace diversity and difference.

WHAT IS ART THERAPY?

Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creativity as a way to engage what is truly in need of support in ours lives.

Often words are inadequate at expressing the complexity of our experiencing. Sometimes talking about the problem we are working with fails to shed light on the keys we need to find, because we can only say what we already think we know.

Sometimes our traumas are too overwhelming to talk about. Perhaps they cannot be consciously re -counted and yet they continuously shape and hijack our daily lives.

Art therapy offers ways to work with more than we know in our conscious minds. It invites collaboration with our bodily and creatively based knowings to support us to work out what is hindering us from living more easeful lives.

Art making is a gentle way to hold strong content so that we may inquire into it, hopefully reshape and understand it.

"The creative process, so far as we are able to follow it at all, consists in the unconscious activation of an image and elaborating and shaping the image into a finished work.

By giving shape, the artist translates it into the language of the present and  so makes it possible for us to find our way back to the deepest springs of life."

C.G. Jung
